As this is my first post, I wanted this post to be about the state I come from, which is Tamil Nadu. Although I am not from the city of Thanjavur, I wish to tell you about one of the most historic and ancient monuments of my state, that is why I chose Thanjai Periya Kovil.

Thanjai Periya Kovil, originally known as Peruvudaiyar Kovil is located in the city of Thanjavur, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This temple is also known as Brihadeeswara Temple. This venerable temple was built by one of the greatest Tamil Kings Raja Raja Chola I, between 1003 to 1010 AD. The temple walls have inscriptions carved in Tamil Language. Thanjai Periya Kovil is part of the ‘UNESCO World Heritage Sites’ known as the ‘Great Living Chola Temples’.    

In Tamil, ‘Kovil’ means ‘Temple’.

As soon as I entered the temple, I was surprised to see such beautifully designed and carved ‘gopurams’. I was stunned to see the tall ‘vimanam’. I also felt very proud, that our Tamil ancestors had built such a grand temple in those days.
