I’ve seen my nonagenarian great grandmother decorating the entrance of the house by making kolam designs until a few years ago, and now my grandmother does it each day. These designs are made by hand from the kolam mix, which contains rice powder.

Another favorite family tradition of mine would be lighting earthen lamps around the house for Kaarthigai Deepam, the Tamil festival of lamps.
