Lunch at Ahmedabad’s Revolving Restaurant- Patang!

Hello everyone!! Feels like decades since I last posted any of my writings here. This year has truly flown by (though I unwaveringly claim so towards the end of each year, it truly feels accurate this time). I was absolutely held up since the past year and until I entered college this year with online tuitions and classes for my Senior School Certificate Examination, more colloquially referred as ‘Board Exams’. My Boards were over by the end of March and once my Common University Entrance Test (CUET) got over on the last day of May this year, I took my annual imaginary oath that I would be more punctual with uploading my write-ups here. I guess that day has come just now, nearly three months after I entered college (which is way more fun than school by the way, more on that later😉).

Apologies in advance if my writing is not as engaging or entertaining as earlier. As it’s been over a year, it was genuinely slightly eerie when I held a pen and paper in hand to draft a write-up here for you guys.

After my CUET exams got over we went on a short and delightful trip to the Indian states of Gujarat and Maharashtra in June which undoubtedly assisted in rewiring my exhausted mind. My mother would totally agree on this, as I’d by then started coming up with absolutely whacky stories and statements as a side effect of my sky high screen time for tuitions and lack of socialisation since almost all year. I guess even my mother needed a break from my concocted fantasy tales.

While in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, we attended the Indian Premier League (IPL) Final match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) where RCB lifted the trophy this season. Apart from witnessing the match we also visited Sabarmati Ashram, Statue of Unity (the world’s tallest statue), Auto World Vintage Car Museum and Patang Re-Evolve after which we continued our travel to Pune, Maharashtra.

As I’m restarting my blogging journey along with persistent encouragement from my parents and besties (yes, I’m talking about you two), I thought I’ll keep this write up on something that connects people across borders and boundaries- food. So this post is going to be about Patang, Ahmedabad’s revolving restaurant.

Inside the restaurant…

The best part about dining here would not just be experiencing a revolving restaurant but also how they have a pre-curated set meal which for sure saves time and makes it more hassle free.

3. Soups:

Mulligatawny Soup or Chow Chow Soup-

While writing this post, I came across an interesting fact-

‘The name “Mulligatawny” comes from the Tamil words “milagu” (pepper) and “tanni” (water), which together mean “pepper water.” The original soup that inspired Mullugtwanny (Popular spelling: Mulligatawny) is called Rasam, a zesty, peppery-garlic consommé.’

During their maritime trade, ancient Tamils exported black pepper, commonly referred as ‘black gold’ to the Romans.

Rasam is a traditional dish popular in South India with a tangy taste due to the tamarind used during preparation.

The structure of the restaurant continued to revolve as the respective courses were served at regular intervals. We got to enjoy our meal as a family with the view of Sabarmati Riverfront and glimpses of buildings, trees and the blue skies of Gujarat’s largest city.

Personally, another highlight on the menu for me was how they had designed it to match with the mango season. Anyone who knows me would be versed with how much I relish mangoes. Though the summers are excessively draining, while looking on the other side it happens to be my favourite season not just because I absolutely detest winters but also because of the joy the mango season brings. You may find it quite peculiar but I prefer my mangoes to be with a hint of tartness and not entirely super sweet as it hits the right spot just then!

I’m a fanatic of the Banganapalli variety of mangoes and a large chunk of my memories in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, zero in on savouring pulpy mangoes as a respite during the scorching summer heat. Hopefully I’m back in my hometown Chennai next summer for the same somewhere between May to June!

Overall, it was a memorable family lunch and Patang has attempted to showcase the king of fruits much to their ability. More importantly, I’m hoping I’ve overcome my writing sabbatical and I would be posting my writings more often here now.

That’s it for this post folks! See you in the next one..
